Internet Explorer 7 and 8 coexist with ZENworks Application Virtualization 8

Novell’s Application Virtualization can be used the stream applications from a Web Server to the Client’s Desktop, creating your own Cloud; or more simply, creating Stand-Alone Applications that can run independently from other applications on the Desktop. In this tutorial we look at virtualizing Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 so that you can have both IE7 and IE8 on a single host eliminating compatibility issues that you may encounter with either browser.

Application Virtualization

Today the term “virtualization” is very common, and all sorts of computing environments can be “virtualized”. With AV we are looking at providing an independent and separate “Windows” environment for each Virtual Application. This way we can then have IE8 and IE7 on the same machine. Other common mitigations could include java based applications that cannot coexist under normal circumstances on the same machine as they each require a specific Java version. They can then coexist as Virtual Apps.

ZENworks Application Virtualization 8

This product from Novell can be used to create Virtual Applications from e template wizard or more bespoke applications that your customize yourself. Here we look at using one of the templates. With this ZAV will download the application components for Internet Explorer 8 and build the Standalone App from the download.

ZAV Templates

Templates exist in ZAV for Microsoft Office versions, Open-Office, 7ZIP, IE6-9 and many more applications. If there is a license requirement you will need to provide your own license for the application to be virtualized.

Using a template has the advantage of not having the monitor the install on the ZAV host. The components needed by the application are downloaded directly from Novell. Once you have chosen your template the download proceeds and you then just need to choose a name for the Stand-Alone Virtual Application.
